Professional Development TrainingOpportunity for School Based Professionalsand Agencies Serving Children, Youth and Familiesby Denise Panichas, M.Ed. Executive DirectorCost: Free – sponsored by RI Dept of Ed.Credit Hours: 2The Samaritans of RI Training Academy, in partnership with the RI Department of Education, is please to announce a new professional development training program combining our Youth and Teen Suicide Prevention Awareness Training class with the art of non-judgmental listening. After more than 38 years on our Crisis Hotline/Listening Line we know there are missed opportunities to connect, in meaningful ways, with people of all ages who are hopeless and alone. Those missed opportunities can lead to hurt feelings, misunderstandings and most importantly isolation. Our class in “active listening” techniques is intended to help participants hear and respond differently to what is said – especially students and their peers. At The Samaritans, we believe those who become better listeners and who demonstrate they really care will be seen as more accessible and welcoming by students, as well as their friends and families, who have a need to connect with school based and community services.Other Workshop Topics Covered:1. The Samaritans of RI role in support of Rhode Islanders in need.2. How to use The Samaritans website as a suicide prevention education resource.3. Review of our suicide and drug overdose emergency checklist. We will also review how to use our “Youth Perspective”website pages which include lesson plans as well as resourcesfor teens and their parents.Click here to view.Upon completion of the class, you will receiveproof of participation for 2 credit hours.Pre-Registration Required: Limited to 20 per class. All classes are 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.2016/2017 Training Dates(Choose one date)October 5th or October 19thNovember 2nd or November 16thFebruary 8th or February 22ndMarch 8th or March 22ndApril 5th or April 19thMay 3rd or May 17thJune 7th or June 21stTo Register: Please or email Denise Panichas, Executive Directordpanichas@samaritansri.necoxmail.comor call 401.721.5220Please include your name, school, cell number and email.Note: The Samaritans is not a licensed, health care agency.
